How tall are Pomeranians?

A grown Pomeranian stands 6 to 7 inches tall at the shoulder, according to AKC, and weighs 3 to 7 pounds under the breed standard. Where breeders have given the parents' adult weights, the mothers weigh 6 to 12 pounds and the fathers weigh 7.5 to 9 pounds.

What does the breed standard say about height?

The written standard sets the size by weight and shape rather than by inches. It asks for 3 to 7 pounds, prefers 4 to 6 in the show ring, and calls the Pomeranian square and short backed, with body length matching height at the withers. The 6 to 7 inch figure comes from AKC's breed profile.

The standard also says any dog over or under the weight limits is objectionable, but that overall quality should be favored over size. A Pomeranian that ends up a little outside the range is still a Pomeranian.

How much of a Pomeranian is coat?

The standard describes a double coat, with a short, dense undercoat under a long outer coat that stands off from the body, a ruff around the neck and a plumed tail. It also notes that a puppy's coat may be dense and shorter overall than an adult's. Because so much of the outline is hair, a photo is a poor way to judge size, and the parents' weights are a better one.

How can you estimate a Pomeranian puppy's adult size?

Ask the breeder what both parents weigh as adults and whether they are fully grown. A puppy from a four pound mother and a five pound father is likely to finish at the small end of the breed, and one from parents at seven pounds or more is likely to finish larger. An earlier litter from the same two dogs is worth asking about as well.

Size words like teacup, micro or toy are not part of the breed standard, which describes one Pomeranian with one weight range. If a listing uses one, the parents' adult weights are the figures to ask for.

When does a Pomeranian stop growing?

VCA Animal Hospitals says some very small dogs reach adult size at 6 to 8 months, with small breeds in general done by 6 to 12.

What health checks matter for a Pomeranian?

The national breed club recommends a patella evaluation for breeding dogs, alongside a cardiac exam and an eye exam by a veterinary ophthalmologist. AKC lists luxating patellas, kneecaps that slip out of place, and collapsing trachea among the conditions responsible breeders screen for. Weight matters after the puppy comes home as well, because when researchers compared neutered, middle-aged Pomeranians seen at vet hospitals in North America, the ones at a normal weight reached a median of 15.5 years and the overweight ones about 13.7.
