How much does a Pomeranian puppy cost?
Every Pomeranian breeder sets their own price, so the useful comparison is what each listing gives you for it, from the parents' health exams to what goes home with the puppy. Pomeranian puppies listed on Puppy Connection right now are priced from $1,800 to $2,500.
Pomeranian listings may lead with a color name or a size word, and neither means quite what it seems under the breed standard. Both are covered below, followed by health testing, deposits and the questions to ask.
Does a rare color make a Pomeranian worth more?
The AKC breed standard allows all colors, patterns and variations, and says they must be judged on an equal basis. It describes brindle, parti, piebald, Irish marked and tan point patterns among others, and none ranks above the rest. So a blue, chocolate or parti puppy is not a better Pomeranian under the standard than an orange or sable one, and a premium for color is the breeder's choice rather than a measure of quality.
A merle puppy needs a closer look, because the standard disqualifies eyes that are light blue, blue marbled or blue flecked. Two merle parents can produce puppies with a double dose of merle, and researchers testing merle dogs' hearing found deafness in 25 percent of double merles against 3.6 percent of single merles. If a puppy is merle, ask about both parents' colors and the puppy's eye color.
What do teacup and toy mean for a Pomeranian?
The standard gives a weight of 3 to 7 pounds, with 4 to 6 pounds the ideal for show dogs, and it has no separate teacup or micro size. A size word in a listing is the breeder's description, so ask what the parents weigh as adults. AKC lists the breed at 6 to 7 inches tall.
What health testing should the parents have?
For breeding Pomeranians the national breed club wants knees, heart and eyes checked. AKC says responsible breeders screen for luxating patellas, hypothyroidism, collapsing trachea, congestive heart failure, seizures and alopecia X, and it tells buyers to ask for copies of the parents' OFA results, since OFA keeps those results in a public database.
What comes home with the puppy?
All 8 listings here come with a vet exam and a health record, and 5 come with a microchip. Each listing says what that puppy goes home with.
Check each listing for vet exams, vaccinations, a microchip and any written guarantee, and ask the breeder what the guarantee covers.
How do deposits work?
Breeders who take a deposit ask $500 to hold a puppy. For any Pomeranian deposit, have the breeder put the terms in writing, including whether you can get the money back.
The FTC's advice for buying a pet online is to walk away from anyone who will take only gift cards, payment apps, cryptocurrency or wire transfers, and to use a credit card if you have one. It also suggests a reverse image search on the puppy's photos.
What should you ask a Pomeranian breeder?
Ask for both parents' adult weights and their patella, heart and eye results. Ask what color each parent is, especially if a puppy is merle. Ask what the price includes and when the puppy can go home.
