Mini Bernedoodle

How big does a Mini Bernedoodle get full grown?

A Mini Bernedoodle has no set full grown size, because it is a cross with no breed standard, and its size comes from a Bernese Mountain Dog at 70 to 115 pounds on one side and a Miniature Poodle at 10 to 15 pounds on the other. Its own parents' weights are the best guide to where a puppy will finish. Where breeders have given the parents' adult weights, the mothers weigh 30 to 85 pounds and the fathers weigh 12 to 25 pounds.

The word Mini is a breeder's size name, so the useful questions are about the actual dogs in the pairing.

How big are the Mini Bernedoodle's parent breeds?

The Bernese Mountain Dog stands 25 to 27½ inches at the withers for males and 23 to 26 inches for females under the AKC breed standard, and AKC lists males at 80 to 115 pounds and females at 70 to 95. On the Poodle side, a Miniature must be more than 10 and at most 15 inches tall under the AKC standard, and AKC gives 10 to 15 pounds.

Even the smallest Bernese in those figures stands eight inches taller and weighs 55 pounds more than the largest Miniature Poodle, and a Mini Bernedoodle can land anywhere the parents in its own pairing allow.

Why do Mini Bernedoodles vary so much?

AKC does not list the Bernedoodle as a breed, so no registry defines what Mini means. One breeder's Mini can be bred from different parents than another's, and a pairing may use a Bernedoodle parent in place of a purebred Bernese, which changes the dogs behind the puppy again. That is why two puppies sold as Mini can grow to quite different sizes, and why the parents matter more than the label.

Puppy Connection also lists Munchkin Bernedoodles, and Munchkin is a different size name breeders use. The same advice applies to both, so compare the parents' adult weights and heights rather than the name.

How can you estimate a Mini Bernedoodle puppy's adult size?

Get the mother's and father's adult height and weight, and check that both are done growing. If one parent is a Bernedoodle, ask about its parents too, since it carries a mix of both breeds. The two parents give you a low and a high mark, and littermates can land at different points between them.

If the same pair of parents has had a litter before, ask what those dogs weigh as adults. That is the nearest thing to a forecast for your puppy.

When does a Mini Bernedoodle stop growing?

That depends on how big the dog ends up, since VCA Animal Hospitals puts small dogs at adult size by 6 to 12 months, medium dogs at about a year and larger dogs at 12 to 18 months. A Mini Bernedoodle from small parents will likely finish early in that span and one from larger parents later, so ask your vet to track the puppy's growth at each visit.

What health testing should the parents have?

Both parent breeds have club health lists for breeding dogs. The Bernese list asks for hips, elbows, heart and eyes to be checked, two DNA tests for degenerative myelopathy, and an AKC DNA profile. The Miniature Poodle list adds knees to hips and eyes, along with a DNA test for PRA-prcd. Ask which of these each parent has had.
