Havanese

How much are Havanese dogs?

A Havanese puppy costs what its breeder asks, and the figure means more once you know which health tests sit behind it and what goes home with the puppy. Havanese puppies listed on Puppy Connection right now are priced from $1,800 to $3,000.

Does color change the price of a Havanese?

The AKC breed standard says all colors and marking patterns are permissible and of equal merit, and that the skin may be any color. A black, cream, gold, chocolate, sable or parti Havanese is equally correct, so the standard offers no reason for one color to cost more than another. If a listing asks more for a particular color, that is the breeder's own pricing.

The standard is more particular about the coat. It describes a long, abundant, wavy coat that is silky and light in both the outer coat and the undercoat, and it disqualifies a coarse, wiry coat and a short, smooth coat. Ask about the parents' coats if a puppy's coat looks unusual for the breed.

What health testing should a Havanese breeder have done?

AKC says the Havanese Club of America gives awards to members whose dogs pass and register OFA results for four tests, which are an annual eye exam, a hearing test called a BAER, a hip X-ray and a patella certification. The national club's recommended list on AKC names patella, hip and eye evaluations for breeding dogs.

Those are the results to ask for, because AKC lists eye disorders, chondrodysplasia, deafness, heart murmurs, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease of the hip joint and patellar luxation among the conditions the breed can be prone to, and says a responsible breeder does health clearances on all breeding stock. OFA keeps results in a public database, so you can look up the parents by their registered names.

What size are you paying for?

The standard gives an ideal height of 9 to 10½ inches at the withers and an acceptable range of 8½ to 11½ inches, and AKC lists the breed at 7 to 13 pounds. A size word in a listing, such as mini or teacup, is not a size in the standard, so ask what the parents weigh and how tall they stand.

Does registration change the price?

Registration can be part of what you pay for, and AKC papers for a Havanese litter need a registered Havanese on both sides. A puppy can be sold on limited registration, meaning it is registered but any litter it has later is not, and only the breeder can change that.

What comes home with the puppy?

All 10 listings here come with a vet exam, a microchip, a health record and AKC registration. Each listing says what that puppy goes home with.

Read what each listing includes before comparing prices, and ask the breeder what any written guarantee covers and for how long.

How do deposits work?

Breeders who take a deposit ask $500 to $600 to hold a puppy. The refund policy and what a deposit secures are the breeder's to explain, so ask before you pay one.

The FTC advises walking away from a seller who will accept only gift cards, payment apps, cryptocurrency or wire transfers. It recommends a credit card where you have one, and suggests visiting or video chatting with the seller before you pay.

What should you ask a Havanese breeder?

Ask whether both parents have eye, hearing, hip and patella results on file with OFA. Ask how tall and heavy the parents are, and what color and coat they have. Ask what is included with the puppy and how the deposit works.
