How much does a Golden Retriever weigh?

A grown male Golden Retriever weighs 65 to 75 pounds under the AKC breed standard, and a female weighs 55 to 65 pounds. Where breeders have given the parents' adult weights, the mothers weigh 65 pounds and the fathers weigh 70 pounds.

What does the breed standard say about height?

Males stand 23 to 24 inches at the withers, which is the top of the shoulder blades, and females stand 21½ to 22½ inches. The standard treats height more strictly than weight, because a dog more than an inch above or below that range is disqualified from the show ring, while weight is simply listed for each sex.

How can you tell how big a Golden puppy will get?

Look at its parents first, since its frame comes from the dam and sire, and a light mother and a heavy father mark out the span you can expect. Ask the breeder for both parents' adult weights if the listing does not give them, and ask whether either parent is still filling out.

If the breeder has had earlier litters from the same pairing, ask what those puppies weigh now. That is the closest thing to a forecast for this litter, because it comes from the same two parents.

Sex matters too, because the standard gives males about ten pounds more than females at both ends of the range, and a male puppy from a given litter is likely to finish heavier than his sisters.

When does a Golden Retriever stop growing?

Large breeds like the Golden generally finish growing between their first birthday and a year and a half, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Have your puppy weighed at each vet visit so your vet can follow its growth with the parents' sizes in mind, and keep it on puppy food for as long as your vet advises.

Is a heavier Golden a healthier Golden?

No, and the research points the other way. In a study of middle-aged, neutered Golden Retrievers seen at North American veterinary hospitals, the dogs in overweight body condition had a shorter median life span than the dogs at a normal weight, by about ten months for both males and females.

The scale alone will not tell you which group a dog is in. Vets judge that with a body condition chart such as the one from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, where a dog at its ideal shows a tuck behind the ribs from the side and its ribs are easy to feel under minimal fat. Your vet can score your Golden on that chart at each visit.

Do Goldens vary in size by color or line?

The breed standard sets one height and weight range for every Golden, whatever the shade of its coat. A breeder may describe a line as larger or smaller, and the parents' own weights are the way to check that claim.
