How big does a Cavapoo get full grown?
A full grown Cavapoo's size comes from its parents, and the parent breeds run from a Toy Poodle at 4 to 6 pounds up to a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel at 13 to 18 pounds, so the best guide for any one puppy is what its own parents weigh. Where breeders have given the parents' adult weights, the mothers weigh 10 to 24 pounds and the fathers weigh 7 to 20 pounds.
The Cavapoo is a cross, and AKC does not list it as a breed, so no registry sets its size and the parents are a better guide than any chart.
How big are the Cavapoo's parent breeds?
On one side is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which AKC lists at 12 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder and 13 to 18 pounds.
On the other is a Poodle, and which variety matters a great deal. The AKC Poodle standard defines a Miniature Poodle as over 10 inches and no more than 15 inches at the shoulder, and AKC lists it at 10 to 15 pounds. A Toy Poodle is 10 inches or under, and AKC lists it at 4 to 6 pounds.
Does a Toy or Miniature Poodle parent change the size?
Yes, and it is the first thing to ask about. A Cavapoo from a Cavalier and a Toy Poodle has one parent at no more than 10 inches and about 4 to 6 pounds, while a Cavapoo from a Cavalier and a Miniature Poodle has one parent that may weigh as much as 15 pounds. A listing that names only "Poodle" leaves out a detail that matters for size, so ask which variety the Poodle parent is and what it weighs.
What about F1 and F1b Cavapoos?
Some listings name a generation, which describes how the cross was made, such as a Cavalier bred to a Poodle, or a Cavapoo bred back to one parent breed, and each step changes which dogs sit behind the puppy. Ask the breeder to name the breed and adult weight of each parent, and of each grandparent if the puppy comes from a Cavapoo parent, because those dogs are the real guide to size.
How can you estimate a Cavapoo puppy's adult size?
Start with both parents' adult weights, and treat the smaller and larger parent as rough bookends. Littermates do not all inherit the same mix from their parents, so expect some spread between them. If the same pair of parents has had an earlier litter, ask what those puppies weigh as adults, which is the closest match you can get.
Ask whether the parents are fully grown too, since a young parent may still be filling out.
When does a Cavapoo stop growing?
Small breeds tend to be fully grown somewhere from six months to a year, by VCA Animal Hospitals' account, with some of the tiniest dogs done by six to eight months. A Cavapoo from a Toy Poodle parent may sit at the early end of that, and one from a Miniature Poodle parent at the later end.
What health testing relates to the parents?
Each parent breed's national club recommends its own exams for breeding dogs. The Cavalier club's list covers knees, hips, heart and eyes. For the Toy and Miniature Poodle it includes a patella evaluation, an eye exam and the PRA-prcd DNA test, and the Miniature list adds a hip evaluation. Ask the breeder which of these each parent has had.
